Free Halloween Plates

Literally ran into CVS to quickly use an expiring ECB.  I got a $5 off Halloween items coupon from the red machine and used it to get some free plates but there are tons of options.  There are Halloween socks for $2.50 and tons of cheap decorations.

Renu sensitive 7.99
2 Halloween plates 2.50 each (used $5 off Halloween items from red machine)
used 4 ECB
subtotal: 3.99

If you're heading to CVS for the Renu, keep your eyes peeled for a bonus pack that has 2 bottles for the price of one.  This bonus pack apparently also produces the ECB, but I couldn't find it at my store.

Using Up Some +Up Bucks

Got this idea from Frugalsuz.  I've been swimming in +up bucks lately so I decided to buy a Duracell MyGrid Power Skin at Rite Aid because it's 26.99 with my 10% wellness discount and I will submit for $25 SCR.  Hopefully I can sell it on ebay for a few bucks :)  I don't even know what is it, exactly...  LOL

Duracell MyGrid Power Skin 26.99
4 Alpo dog food at 1.25 each
quaker oats 1.99 (used 1/1 manuf. coupon)
used 5/25
used 24 +up bucks

So happy that I'm ALMOST at 20% wellness discount.  Does anyone know how long the discount will last?  Will it all reset at the beginning of the new year?  I hope not!

Amazingly Easy Black Bean Salsa Dip

One of my co-workers made this for a work party a couple of years ago, and I asked her for the recipe.  Over the years, I've simplified it again and again until now it's so easy I can make it while holding a small child.  And isn't that the kind of recipe every mom needs? :)

All you need to do is drain a can of corn, a can of black beans, and a can of diced tomatoes (choose a zesty one for more flavor).  Dump them all into a giant bowl, mix it together, and top it off with some Paul Newman's Balsamic Dressing.

The original recipe listed this specific dressing and I haven't wavered from that.  I'm sure other balsamic dressings would be fine, but I haven't tried yet...  Serve with tortilla chips and you have a snack, an appetizer, or even a simple meal for a relaxing night watching a movie.  You could even put this in a fancy bowl and bring it to a party.  I promise everyone will think you put in more work than you did!  The best part of this recipe is that my fussy children love it and they eat some corn, tomatoes, and beans (3 things that they are often fussy about when served by themselves or in different forms).

For all you adventurous chefs, the original recipe called for scallions and garlic and a few other little additions, but then you would need full use of both extremities. :)

Squeaky Clean Kids... Thanks to Rite Aid

Have I mentioned how much I love Rite Aid lately?

Transaction 1:
7 Johnson & Johnson items 3.99 each (used 7 1/1 and 1/1 vv))
1 Desitin 3.99 (used 1/1)
used 5/25
used 10+up, 5 +up, and 1.50 +up
subtotal: 1.42
total w/ tax: 3.25 on gift card, received 8 2+up (for each item) and 10+up for buying $30 worth of Johnson & Johnson items

Transaction 2 - not pictured, but basically a repeat of Transaction 1.

I tried to use a +up the other day but it was cutting into the tax so the register didn't accept it.  I tried to use it today but because it had been scanned the other day, the register said it was already used.  The manager looked at me suspiciously, but punched something into the register and accepted it.  I really hope Rite Aid fixes this glitch soon.  Is anyone else having problems with this?

Free Toilet Paper and Toothpaste But a Lot of Anxiety!

I volunteered to do my non-frugal grandmother's shopping today since I was going to Shoprite.  But her giant and very specific list + my coupons + chatty child in cart = anxiety attack.  Not a fun trip.  The cart was overflowing, I kept dropping coupons,... ugh.  And it took soooo long.  Trying to shop for someone else (especially someone who's very specific) is like a scavenger hunt.

Making Money on Air Wick at Rite Aid

My fussy cat loves Purina Friskies pouches of cat food.  Won't touch any other type of wet cat food.  He's also allergic to salmon and beef makes him throw up.  Rite Aid and Petsmart are the only places I have found that sell the individual pouches of cat food.  Everywhere else sells a variety pack which includes one or two of the types my cat can't eat.  So off to Rite Aid to turn air fresheners into cheap cat food...

Transaction 1:
7 Air Wick i-motion kits 4.99 each (used 7 4/1 from 8/29 SS and 1/1 Airwick vv)
used 5/25
subtotal: .93
total w/ tax: 3.32 on gc, received $10 +up

subtotal: 2.12
w/ tax: 2.93 on gift card, received 2 4+up for biotrue
*I realized right after I paid that I forgot to use the 5/1 c.booth in-ad coupon that I was holding...  Those of you who shop with kids totally understand how this can happen, right?  Anyway, I told the cashier and she gave me $5 cash back.  Thanks! :)

Watch Carefully When +Ups Are Scanning at Rite Aid

Grabbed a few things at Rite Aid yesterday in what was supposed to be a quick trip.  But my total seemed really high, and then I realized that 6 +up bucks that I had given the cashier were not anywhere to be found on my receipt.  I was sure they were scanned because :I saw her do it, but she also scanned a bunch really quickly.  The cashier and supervisor played around with the register for a LONG time before deciding how to handle it.  They ended up just giving me $6 in cash.  So I learned my lesson and now have to hand over each +up buck separately and watch to make sure the amount is deducted.  Don't you hate these games we have to play?

  • gain .89 (used 1/1 from 8/29 P&G)

  • bufferin 6.99 (used 3/1 from  7/11 SS)
  • john frieda root awakenings smoothing lotion 6.29 (used 3/1)
used 4 +up
subtotal: 12.88

How I Got Free Cheese at Shoprite!

I wasn't too thrilled with my recent unorganized trip to Shoprite so I thought I'd redeem myself...  Before I breakdown my purchases, I wanted to share that the Borden cheese slices sale ( .99 each) includes the Single Sensations (which are really good, by the way), and there's a $1.00 PDF available here.  Just click on Get Special Savings.

  • 3 Quaker Mini Rice Cakes .99 each (used 3 .75/1 doubled found in boxes of Quaker oatmeal)=.51 overage on each
  • 2 marcal toilet paper .99 each (used 2 freebie coupons)=free
  • 1 can SR corn .75
  • Uncle Ben's Spanish Rice 1.99
  • santitas tortilla chips 2.00
  • SR white bread .88
  • Fast Fixin buffalo tenders 6.49 (used 1.25/1 from recent All You, sorry can't remember if it was July or August)
  • 2 Del Monte fruit smoothies 1.00 each (used 2 1.00/1 from coupons.com) (these are located in the produce aisle)
  • garlic .52
  • 4 Mission burritos 1.64 each (used 4 .75/1 doubled)=.14 each
  • 6 Borden Single Sensations .99 each (used 6 1.00/1)=.01 overage on each
  • used $1 catalina
  • received .20 canvas bag refund
  • total: $6.50 on cc, will submit for $6.49 TMF refund on Fast Fixin (TMF sticker on the bag)
Looking at my receipt, I see that there are 2 mistakes.  It seems like the cashier accidentally scanned the Fast Fixin 1.25 coupon twice, and there's also an extra .75/1 doubled coupon.  This explains why my total is a little lower than it should be.

I'm totally planning to go back on Saturday and snag more free cheese and cheap tortillas!  Does anyone know if tortillas freeze well?

Nothing to Brag About at Shoprite, But Bragworthy Meatballs at Home!

My Shoprite trip is really not blog-worthy due to lack of planning and organization.  I didn't go food shopping at all over the weekend, and we were really in need of some of the basics...  But here it is...

Kraft mac and cheese cup 1.00
4 Campbell's Shrek soup 1.00 each (used 1/4 manu. IP) (*Shrek soup is on clearance still!)

1 pk rolls 1.74

organic baby carrots raincheck price of .99
total: 45.06, received 1 catalina for Campbell's soup, will submit for $5 Hillshire Farm rebate

I really don't enjoy cooking.  It's one area of my life where I feel really insecure, and my fussy children don't help to boost my confidence in the kitchen.  I'll try out a new recipe, work really hard on it, and it's met with "yuck - can I have spaghettio's instead???"  So I was initially a little hesitant to try a recipe that was stuck on the top of a jar of Ragu that I got during an Extra Bucks deal at CVS a few weeks ago.

But "Mama's Best Spaghetti and Meatballs" sounded really easy.  My family likes spaghetti, but I'll admit I've never made meatballs before.  I don't use ground beef, hence the ground turkey I got at Shoprite today.  All I needed was 1 lb. of ground turkey, 1/2 cup of Italian seasoned bread crumbs, 1 jar of Ragu, and 1 egg.  And spaghetti, of course.  I used Ronzoni Garden Delight from my stockpile.

First, I cooked the spaghetti.  Easy.
Then I mixed one egg, 1/2 cup of Italian seasoned bread crumbs, and the 1 lb. of ground turkey together.  Shaped it into about 12 meatballs.
Then in a separate pot, I boiled the Ragu sauce.  Dropped in the meatballs, covered, and reduced to simmer for 20 minutes.

Poured it over the spaghetti and Done!  I was hoping for a meatball sandwich for lunch tomorrow, but there are NO leftovers - a sure sign that this recipe is a winner, even in my house o' picky eaters!  And nobody asked for spaghettio's tonight!

My Shoprite Trip Today

Short and sweet Shoprite trip today.  I was thinking about also running into CVS but the deals have been kind of lackluster lately, so I decided to skip it.  I was unable to find the elusive Pops Mix-it at my store, so I couldn't do the money making deal I had hoped for.

Transaction 1:

BzzAgent=Free Salon Brand Shampoo

Since I started "doing the deals" I have a mental list of a bunch of things I refuse to pay money for.  This includes shampoo, toothpaste, razors...  you know the stuff we're always getting paid to remove from the store shelves.  But sometimes the free shampoo isn't so great.  That's why I was so happy to get invited to the Sebastian Professional Volume Collection BzzCampaign on BzzAgent.com.  I joined BzzAgent last year, and in that time, I've gotten to try a bunch of free things: Children's Claritin, got2b hair products, Cover Girl products...  I haven't gotten the Sebastian products yet, but I'm really excited because salon hair products are usually so expensive.  I'll post a picture when it arrives.  Go to bzzagent.com to sign up.

Possible Money Maker at Shoprite!

There's a new .75/1 printable coupon for Pops Mix-it.  (I think it's flavoring to mix with Corn Pops but I'm not positive).  It costs around $1.79 at Shoprite - IF you can find it.  It's not in all stores yet.  Plus, the buy 10 Kelloggs, get $10 catalina is still going on.  If your SR doesn't limit to 4 like coupons, you can easily have a money maker with this if you can print from a few computers. I think I can print 8, so here's what I'll try:

8 Pop Mix-it 1.79 each (use 8 .75/1 doubled) = .19 each
2 Eggos 2.25 each (use 1/2 7/25 RP) = 3.50
Pay $3.88, get $10 catalina

It you can only use 4 Mix-it coupons, you can still make this a small money maker:
4 Pop Mix-it 1.79 each (use 8 .75/1 doubled) = .19 each
6 Pop Tarts 1.67 each (use 3 1/2 from 7/11 RP)
Pay $8.18, get $10 catalina

Thanks to Living Rich With Coupons for the idea!

New Huggies Coupons

Coupons.com has a couple new Huggies coupons.
2/1 Huggies Little Snugglers
2.50/1 Huggies Pure and Natural

Also, if you haven't printed them yet, these are still available at smartsource.com
2.50/3 Huggies wipes
4.00/2 Huggies Little Movers or Little Snugglers
3.50/2 Huggies Snug and Dry

My Shoprite Shopping List

Here's my plan of attack for shoprite this week...  Nothing too amazing.  I'm going to try to stick to a few freebies, a few essentials that we need each week (water jugs, bread, and fresh fruit/veggies), and eat out of the stockpile.

Gum toothbrush .99 (use .75/1 8/8 RP) = free
Blue bunny bars 1.49 (use .75/1 doubled June All You) = free
Right Guard Deodorant .88 each (use 2/2 printable) = free
Hillshire Farms lunchmeat 3.99 ($5 in coupons or rebate) (thanks to frugalsuz for posting about this)
Organic baby carrots .99 with in-ad coupon
St. Ives Body Wash 2.00 (use 1/1 from 7/18 SS) = 1.00, get 1.00 catalina
Butterball turkey franks 1.64 (use .75/1 from 8/8 doubled) = .14

See anything amazing that I missed?

Pampers Redeems Itself

I was less than thrilled with the new Pampers Dry Max.  After using the diaper, one of my children got a bumpy rash.  I emailed Pampers about it, and they sent me 3 coupons for free jumbo size diapers.  I won't be buying any more Dry Max diapers, but Pampers informed me that the Baby Dry diapers have not been changed and do not contain "Dry Max."  I'm glad I took the 5 minutes out of my busy day to complain!  It certainly paid off.  Anyone else having good or bad experiences with Dry Max??

(Real) Life Gets in the Way

I took a little hiatus from blogging due to a nasty cold running through the family, hectic days at work, an unexpected trip to the ER due to a door knob inflicted head injury (he's fine, thank goodness), and some   un-blogworthy shopping trips.  I thought about just throwing in the blogging towel.  Then I saw The Coupon Goddess's blog today with her amazing trip to the BlogHer conference.  Wow!  I only hope that I can one day get to the point where I get to experience some of these awesome perks of blogging.  But in the meantime, I'm going to plow along, posting all my shopping trips, even the embarrassingly poorly planned ones with high OOP totals.  And maybe in 2011, I'll even try to achieve some totally impossible goal like $1000 budget for the whole year, diapers, dog food, and all!

More Money in My Purse Than When I Left!

Slim pickings at Walgreens today...  Wanted to get some items that are part of the 4 day sale, but nothing was marked, and I didn't see anything about it in my ad.  Was it regional?  I didn't feel like having an item scanned to check so I just skipped it.  When I went to check out, the male cashier I've never seen before looked at my Reach coupons and said, "you printed these from the internet???" with an astonished tone to his voice.

CVS Meeting All My Needs

A little over a year ago, I never used to go to CVS.  Occasionally I'd stop in for something like hair dye or makeup.  But now using Extra Care Bucks, I manage to pick up all kinds of random things that we need like dog food and dish washing detergent...Even when these things aren't on sale at CVS, it's better to use ECB than real money, right??  I'm jealous of the couponers with awesome stockpiles who NEVER need to buy anything when it's not free or almost-free, but I'm not there yet.  Hopefully one day!

Transaction 1:
1 roll of tape - clearance .62
Maxwell House decaf coffee 3.00
2 Colgate 2.99 each (used 2 1/1)

Free Father's Day Gift But Still Messing Up at Wags

First, a great Rite Aid trip...
Mousepad 11.69 (used freebie VV coupon, took off 12.99!)
Huggies jumbo pack 8.99 (used 3/1 from coupons.com and 1/1 vv)
trial pack of Tugaboos .89 (used 1/1 found inside trial pack)
Ivory soap 3 pk .99 (used 1/1 from Rouge coupons mailed to me)
Herbal Essence shampoo 2.49 (used 1/1)
used 5/25
subtotal: .06
total with tax: .47 on gift card, received 1 +Up for Huggies, and will submit for 1.50 SCR (Herbal Essence).  This will also count toward buy 5 get 1 Huggies

Now my not so great Walgreens trip...
Nivea bodywash 5.99 (used 3/1)
2 Reach total care toothbrushes 4.79 each (used BOGO and in-ad 3/1 coupon)*
Nestle crunch bar .39
used 2.50 RR
subtotal 2.67
total with tax: 3.72 on gift card, received 6RR for Nivea

I expected the in-ad coupon to take off $6 automatically, but it only took off 3.  I think this happened because I believe the cashier scanned the RR before the in-ad coupon, which brought my subtotal below $6.  Oops.  Still learning all the ins and outs of Walgreens.  Maybe I'll try this transaction again tomorrow and try to redeem myself.

Last Minute Deals and $3 Dinner Out

Some hits and misses yesterday afternoon...  I hate to post after most of these deals have already ended, but sometimes it's hard to fit everything in.  I don't know how all you supermoms out there do it, juggling kids, jobs, couponing, etc, etc...  I try to post on the blog after the kids go to sleep, but sometime in the middle of reading one of the Magic Tree House books to my kids last night, my eyes shut and didn't wake up until the morning....

Walgreens
1 Kotex 3.49 (used 1/1)
2 Reeses minis 2 for $5*
used 5RR and 2 RR
subtotal:  49
total with tax: 1.17 paid with cash, received 2.50 RR for Kotex and coupon for free Always

*There was a sign by the Reeses that said if you buy 2 for $5 you get $5 register rewards.  I believe this was a mistake because the ad said you had to buy $10 worth.  I gave it a shot and the RR didn't print.  I showed the cashier the sign and she tried to tell me the RR didn't print because I paid with RR.  I hate having to explain how the RR program works to the employees!  I just got a refund, in cash, of 5.40 and returned the candy.

Today we had a Red Robin dinner that turned out to only cost $3 for a $40 meal!  A few months ago, I was disappointed in our experience at the restaurant and decided to email the company and politely complain.  They sent me back 2 free entrees.  My dad had a Red Robin gift card he got from credit card points.  So after both of these, we got a really cheap, big dinner!  It pays to compliment or complain!!!

Getting Greedy

I ran into CVS to check on the prices of Huggies Mega packs.  They are at varying clearance prices.  The ones at the store I went to were marked 11.99, I think, but scanned at 8.99.  But I heard that other people have now found them for $4.49.  So I'm holding out.  Hopefully they'll continue to be reduced in my region.

On to Rite Aid...
1 can of alpo 1.39 (horrible price, but the dog's gotta eat and I needed a filler to get to $20)
1 style science sunglasses 9.99 (used 10/1 vv)
1 huggies 8.99 (used 3/1 and 1/1 vv)
used 5/20
subtotal: 1.37
total with tax: 2.26 on gift card, will receive $2 Huggies SCR, and once I do this deal again, I'll get $10 sunglasses SCR
